Hello friends,
Our vet thinks that Oskar has a spinal lesion, which is like a slipped disc. He will be on Prednisone for 3 weeks along with Pepcid AC for his stomach because the Prednisone can be kind of harsh.
Right now he can walk pretty well when he can get up, but he really can’t get up from a sitting or laying down position. His back legs won’t lift him up. We have to keep him from running, jumping, etc. for at least 2 weeks which will be a challenge.
Here’s a link to a YouTube video of what’s happening.
It’s really terrifying to see him not be able to get up like this.
We would love to hear from anyone who has been through this before.
Oh Noes!! Oskar, that doesn’t look likes funs at all!!
I’ll be sendin’ you some healin’ vibes and lots and lots of POTP!! And, lots of {{{{hugs}}}} for your peeps!
Get better soon Oskar!!

I’m so sorry to hear this. It is heartbreaking seeing them lose their mobility, and not always knowing why. We’re currently having similar issues with our Lab too, so I know what you are going through. (((Hugs)))
Good luck keeping him still for two weeks. I know that’s no easy task either. I sincerely hope the meds help him!

Oh what great news. The fact that he’s walking around a bit indicates he’s not in constant pain. I’m so happy to hear this. Purrs will still be coming his way, and M has him in thoughts and prayers. purr purr purr purr purr purr

Sending thoughts and prayers
My mommy’s first doggie from when she was a young pup slipped a disk and couldn’t get her legs working. The V-E-T came in from eating Thanksgiving dinner just to do X-rays and whatever else. Mom said she doesn’t remember many details after that, but that Sandy generally recovered (She was pretty old at the time, so that plus arthritis made it hard, but manageable). Many healing thoughts!

Oh no…my tears are coming…this could be any of our babies….It kills me to see Oskar obviously hurting, and “it appears” to me (just a Schnauzer owner, no vet) that he is afraid to move, for fear of pain….you must be worried beyond words…I will pray extra prayers….good luck….
I hope you get better real soon, Oskar! We’ll cross our paws for you.

Heartbreaking is not a strong enough word to see your baby having this sort of a problem. We used to have a cocker spaniel, one of the best dogs in the world, and he had a leg problem and would have to literally drag his hind end, totally unable to walk. The vet said it was a problem with his knees, indicating that he basically damaged them both at once. Unfortunately the surgery to repair it was very hard on a dog and they would do one at a time and the vet said it would be like recovering from 2 consecutive broken legs. The dog was very old and the vet did not think he could withstand the surgery and subsequent recovery from it (twice). But he did tell us that scar tissue would help support the joint. So the dog lived another couple years and with care (and meds) did fairly well physically and continued to be his joyful, loving, self. We pray Oskar has a pinched nerve or something that can be easily fixed.
Your Pals,
Murphy & Stanley
Hope it heals up real soon xx

Oh, oskar! I’ve been away for so long and i missed a lot. Sorry to see you like that. Prrrr… Momma sends her love to you, buddy.
Very belatedly…. we actually had to go through the actual slipped disc scare last year. HufflePup was so confused about why his front legs went forward and his back legs stayed behind. He had to have back surgery to remove the bulging discs that were making it impossible for him to walk. He had a four to six week recovery (a little about that here: http://hufflepup.com/?p=139) and his MRI showed degeneration in the rest of his spine so he’s predisposed to slipping another one with the right circumstances. We no longer let him jump in and out or on and off ANYTHING: no furniture, no car-hopping, etc.
It was a scary, heartstopping time, but he’s recovered surprisingly well from emergency surgery and we’re keeping an eagle eye on him. I hope Oskar’s rest period will be more peaceful and less angsty than ours was!!

We may be going though exact same thing with our 5 yo schnauzer. Email me and maybe I could ask you a few questions? If I touch his lower back he writhes in pain. I’m really worried.
